ELIANE RODRIGUES - BRAZIL
BORN 07 OCTOBER

Eliane Rodrigues was born in Rio de Janeiro. The fact that she was a child prodigy was noticeable at a very early age: she started composing at three, played her first recital at five, and performed with an orchestra at the ages of six and seven. From that moment on, she won prizes at numerous regional and national competitions, going on to win the special prize at the Van Cliburn Competition in the USA when she was just 18. She won the public's prize at the 1983 Queen Elisabeth Competition as well as finishing 5th.

Since then, she has performed in major cities from all over the world. For over 20 years, she has been invited to De Doelen in Rotterdam to perform a Chopin recital on Boxing Day.

She is also professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. She recorded over 25 CDs of both live concerts and studio albums, amongst them Sergey Prokofiev's five piano concertos and all eight of Beethoven's piano concertos in St. Petersburg.

Most recently is her collaboration with Parma Recordings which resulted in a digital re-release of the Beethoven recordings on Naxos, iTunes, Amazon and Spotify, two new CD's (a Chopin and Debussy album) and a third one with American music from Leonard Bernstein and George Gershwin, arrangements for 2 pianos and percussion with daughter Nina Smeets, Carlo Willems and Koen Wilmaers.

KHOSROVIDUKHT - ARMENIA
LIVED IN THE 8TH CENTURY

Khosrovidukht also known as Xosroviduxt was an Armenian hymnographer and poet who lived during the 8th century.

One of the earliest known women musicians, Khosrovidukht was recorded as having been a member of the royal family, but here accounts differ as to her historical importance. Some sources hold that in the 8th-century, her brother was abducted by Arabs of the Muslim faith. Following this, she was taken to the fortress of Ani-Kamakh, now known as Kemah, where she lived in isolation for twenty years.

Khosrovidukht is reputed to be the composer of a šarakan, or canonical hymn titled "Zarmanali e Ints" ("Wondrous it is to me"). According to some sources, it honors the memory of her brother, who was assassinated in 737 for converting to Christianity. Although the subject of the piece is secular, it was sanctioned for use in services by the Armenian Church. A recording of the šarakan exists, performed by the Sharakan Early Music Ensemble.
