PINAR TOPRAK - TURKEY

Pinar Toprak (Pınar Toprak in Turkish) is a Turkish-American composer for film, television and video games. She has won two International Film Music Critics Association Awards for The Lightkeepers (2009) and The Wind Gods (2013).

Toprak was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey, where she began her classical musical education at the age of five. After studying composition and multiple instruments at the conservatory, she moved to Chicago to study jazz, then Boston. She joined the music production company Media Ventures International (now known as Remote Control), home of film composer Hans Zimmer.

Having studied and practiced music from a very young age, Pinar earned a degree in film scoring and a master’s degree in composition at age 22 before working alongside legendary composers including Hans Zimmer and William Ross. Pinar then went on to make a name for herself scoring dozens of projects across many mediums including the massively popular video game Fortnite, Syfy TV series Krypton, thriller The River Murders, period drama The Lightkeepers and additional music on box office hit Justice League. Her additional credits include the films Behind Enemy Lines: Axis Of Evil, The Challenger, Breaking Point, Light of Olympia, Say it in Russian, The Angel, and The Wind Gods, video game Ninety-Nine Nights, and TV series Falling Water.

Pinar’s work can next be heard in the highly anticipated Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson and set to be released by Disney on March 8. Pinar most recently composed the jazz inspired score for the Pixar SparkShort, PURL about an earnest ball of yarn who gets a job and finds herself asking how far she is willing to go to fit in and get the acceptance she yearns for.

MELINDA BARGREEN - USA
BORN 18 OCTOBER

Melinda Bargreen (b. 1947) Melinda Bargreen is a Seattle-based composer and who was classical music critic of The Seattle Times from 1977 to 2008, and now writes freelance reviews and articles for KING-FM Radio (www.king.org) and for several national and international publications (both print and on-line).

She started piano studies at four, and composing at five. Melinda has B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Washington, and a doctorate in English and Comparative Literature from the University of California, Irvine. Melinda was Artist in Residence in April of 2009 at Gordon College (Mass.).

She has published several choral works for mixed chorus and women’s chorus. She won several awards and honors, like several first, second and third place awards over the past 31 years from the Society of Professional Journalists; Kennedy Center Award for writing about arts education and others.
