WOMEN COMPOSERS 365 DAYS A YEAR

Meet the ComposHer: Tawnie Olson

Tuesday, 25 February 2020
Tawnie Olson is a Canadian composer who composes inspired by politics, spirituality, the natural world, and the musicians for whom she composes.

She won several prizes and her music is performed in the five continents.  Learn more about her and her outstanding work in the Meet the ComposHer of this week!

When I was a child I wanted to be a writer; I was always composing, but was not encouraged to do so (I received a lot of encouragement for my fiction writing).

The conductor Marguerite Brooks has probably had the most lasting impact on my music and career. Not only has she championed my music, she is also an important model of strong female leadership.

I am extremely introverted and shy, which makes self-promotion and networking really difficult.

I do a lot of sketching. I try to let each piece blossom into what its materials want to be. I also love collaborating with performers and getting their feedback into my work in progress.

Something to Say (the recording can be streamed for free or purchased for download).

I love Respiri - in memoriam Jonathan Harvey, by Juri Seo.

It’s okay to stand up for yourself, it’s okay to ask for what you want or need.

Try not to worry about controlling other people’s artistic output; instead work on creating your own music with as much integrity as possible.
