Learn more about her and her awesome works in the Meet the ComposHer of this week!
From the age of around 12 years when I realized that I could, but I had imagined being one from as young as 5 years old.
Being a composer and a woman. I suffered from some problems with gender discrimination as a young woman, and I was very disheartened. I stopped composing for a long time.
I hear something in my mind, and I work to produce what I hear. I build my pieces up from small units into larger blocks of sound, often intensely contrapuntal; it is a great joy to succeed in creating the sounds that come from within me.
I chose this because it is a work about how I turned my life around and became a successful composer against all the odds. The owl symbolizes the moment of transformation when I took control of my own life.
Expect obstacles, never stop trying to overcome them.
Women must encourage and support one another. Play music by women, programme it, tell performers about it.
