ELENA ROMERO BARBOSA - SPAIN
DIED 2 APRIL

Elena Romero Barbosa was a pianist, composer, music teacher and Spanish orchestra director. She was the first woman director of a great symphony orchestra in Spain. She began her musical training with hes mother as a child and later studied composition at the Royal Superior Conservatory of Madrid with Joaquín Turina and Julio Gómez, and continued conducting studies with Ataúlfo Argenta.

Later, in Barcelona, she expanded her piano studies with Frank Marshall (whose academy was one of the main cultural centers of the city) and composition with Ricardo Lamote de Grignon. On the other hand, it is worth mentioning the relationship, professional and friendship, that she had with Salvador Bacarisse since their stay in Barcelona and that was extended, subsequently, in the exile of her friend in Paris.

Regarding her career as a concert pianist, the virtuosity of Elena Romero was recognized from her childhood and her work, in this area, allowed the diffusion of the pianistic repertoire of the main composers of the Generation of '27. Her performances were heard in numerous Spanish and international tours, as well as in the field of radio (where Elena Romero was a reference to publicize the "new music").

On the other hand, in the section of the composition it is possible to establish various compositional periods that follow some of the trends of the time: a period that emerges as an approach to the impressionism of Debussy, an approximate period to the style of neoclassical composition and a closer stage to politonal and non-strict dodecaphonic techniques. His catalog of works is composed of 65 works, covering all the usual genres: compositions for choir, for singing and piano, chamber music, symphonic music, etc.

Among the awards received throughout her career stand out: the Pedrell prize for his ballet puppets composed in 1950 and the BBC prize (1976) for an orchestra rehearsal on two South African songs.
